How A Rabbit Becomes The Best In Show

The top rabbit (class winner) is not removed from the table and you should not reveal to the judge that you are showing that rabbit at that time.  The judge will continue with the next class until all of the solid Holland Lops (or broken) have been judged and there are four first place rabbits remaining:  a senior buck, a senior doe, a junior buck and a junior doe.

Now the judge picks the best rabbit from these four.  This rabbit is the best of group.  Then the judge picks the best rabbit from the opposite sex.  That rabbit is the best opposite sex of group (BOSG).  For example, if the junior buck is the best of group, then the judge will pick from between the senior doe and the junior doe for best opposite sex of group.  The best of group and best opposite sex of group remain on the table while the broken Holland Lops are judged.  The Best of Group competes for Best of Breed.  [Note:  often the judge will use the word "variety" instead of "group" and you may even receive legs that say "variety," but Hollands are shown in two groups.]

Now it’s time for the two best of group Holland Lops to complete for Best of Breed (BOB) and the right to compete with other breeds for the Best In Show and Best Reserve honors.  Either the solid BOV or the broken BOV will be the Best of Breed.  The BOSV rabbits are not eligible.

Once the BOB Holland lop is chosen, the judge then selects the best rabbit that is the opposite sex of the BOB.  If the BOB is a buck, then the BOS is a doe and vice versa.  The BOV Holland is eligible for BOS if it is of the opposite sex of the BOB.

The Best of Breed goes on to complete for Best in Show.  You may remove your BOS and BOB from the table now.  But if your rabbit is BOB, be sure to listen for the announcement for the Best in Show competition, which will not happen until all breeds of rabbit have been judged.

The Best In Show judge will pick the best rabbit and the runner up, which is the Best Reserve In Show (BRIS).  Occasionally, they may also select a Second Reserve In Show.  Gender is not a consideration when select BRIS.
